Stressfull But productive Week

Stressfull But productive Week

Firstly allow me to apologise for being a bit slack on the blogging front! Life has all been a bit manic lately, however lots going on behind the scenes. Poor little Gemma has been backwards and forwards to the vets with shortness of breath, a bad cough and very lethargic. Blood tests, chest x-rays and an ultrasound are so far inconclusive. More bloods have been taken and are being sent to a cardiologist – currently suspecting heart worm or lung worm. So lots of medication and lots of love from her foster carer, but she is one very poorly little girl. With this at the forefront of our minds we have been ramping up the fundraising ideas, we have a photo competition on our facebook page, the weekly auction and also a Northern Soul Evening on the 7th March – tickets £5 oh and a raffle to be drawn on the night at £1 a strip with some amazing prizes including a huge Easter Egg from Betty’s!    To be in with a chance of winning you can paypal the money and state what it is for – please use the friends and family option and we will issue your tickets, BACS and cash is fine too! We will also be at Pets at Home in Harrogate on the 21st and 22nd Feb raising funds – come and say hello! Earlier this week Jeanne stated she was down to her last duvet, so I popped a plea on facebook, and within hours a chap arrived with a van load from the Army Foundation College – so a big thanks...

Busy Day

Today has been a busy day, a double shift at the day job, chatting to people on facebook regarding being potential foster carers and adopters. Pre adoption forms dropped off. This evening I went to assess Jack the JRT, he is a feisty one,but his problems are a 2 way street, him and the resident male detest each other, Jack is very ahem randy, neutering will assist with this. Two un neutered males are never a good mix. So he will be looking for a new home with no children at least no young children and probably as an only dog. Have also had a message from a lady looking to rehome a 3yr old GSD, it has become destructive due to boredom and spends long times in a crate which the owner doesnt feel is fair. So another one on the books looking for a placement. We have many aims this year, but the biggest is we need to secure some kennel facilities of our own, we use some in York, and they are lovely as are the people that run it however distance is an issue which means we cannot spend as much time with the dogs as we would like and it is difficult to introduce to potential homes. We also desperately need more foster carers, and of course forever homes. Seems all our fosterers fail so we loose a space, but all good for the lucky dogs though. Fundsare also a big issue currently, we have restarted our online auctions on facebook, Miss Mollies Items For Auction so am hopeful they go as well as...
A Gift of Happiness

A Gift of Happiness

So today after a shift at work I popped up to Jeannes to collect the ‘little boxes of happiness’ to drop off to people who maybe had a hard time or go that extra mile, we wanted to give something back so asked our members to make nominations which they did. Hopefully they raised a little smile. On my travels I popped to see Mylo, an elderly poodle with cushings and arthritis, let him out for a pee and gave him his medication. He is in foster with a lovely lady and such a lucky little dog and very happy, they obviously love each other dearly. I then popped to see Karen, one of our foster carers, she takes in our special needs dogs. Honey and Missy are both with Karen, Honey having been there coming up 4 weeks now, has gone from a terrified little dog who would hide in a corner to a confident happy little girl. When she arrived she was terrified of the lead, would curl into the fetal position, pee herself and just have a full on meltdown. Well today with thanks to all Karens hard work I took Honey for a walk, she was still a little tense but no curling up and loved the smells out on the fields and even pulled me along a little in parts – a fantastic moment to share!! Then this evening I have been contacted by a gentleman, he took in a jack russell from a lady who said she couldn’t cope with it, unfortunately it doesn’t get on with his male dog so has asked...

Abandoned Dogs

Last night I was contacted by a concerned member of the public, a staffy had been abandoned by his family, left in the garden with no food or water and just a shed to sleep in with no bedding. I agreed to go take a look first thing this morning. I had been informed he wasnt in great condition and the owners had advised neighbours to get rid of him, other organisations had been called but showed little interest as locals were feeding and watering him. On arrival I found a garden full of bare earth and rubbish, but sadly no dog, neighbours stated he was there last night but sometimes wandered locally. extensive searches showed nothing so we can only hope someone has picked him up and taken to a safe place, he was apparently badly beaten and almost bald from mange so will of had a cold night last night. We do not have the powers to seize neglected dogs, so we can only advise owners to surrender them, help is always available somewhere so please please do not just dump them. We are on a serious mission this year to secure some kennel facilities close to home with space for more dogs, and a big push for a network of foster homes so we do not have to turn dogs away, we also need forever homes and predominantly funds as without we cannot help and treat the dogs we do take...
New Year – New Start

New Year – New Start

So 2015 is well and truly upon us. The Christmas period saw us close down for a month so no dogs were re homed in the hope that breakdowns of placements are minimised. However on Boxing day 2014 we received a call about a young dog tied to a tree needing an urgent placement so of course we responded. It was a 10-12 week old GSD puppy female, very cold and full of fleas. She was taken to the vets the following day and treated for fleas and worms and began her vaccinations. We were inundated with calls offering her a home and she was adopted new years day and named...
